00:13:31 DiscordBot <rymiel> every time i see v all i can think about is the guy who tried to praise v on the v forum page but his sentences got cut off because the forum page was buggy (it was written in v)

00:56:47 DiscordBot <MatrixFurry> i would say wait for them to respond for now, and ping them once a day for a week if they don't reply
00:57:31 DiscordBot <MatrixFurry> afer the week idk what to do besides ban them and save the username

01:14:23 DiscordBot <simple! (he/him)> You can do that in Java, it'll automatically call toString if it has one lol
01:36:10 DiscordBot <simple! (he/him)> 🤷‍♂️ https://replit.com/@simpleauthority/PaltryAverageResources#Main.java
01:38:25 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> depends on the context in which you use it, e.g. it won't automatically call toString in cases where it would practically be a cast, etc
01:38:46 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> "" + var; works because it can determine that you're tryna do string concat so for some reason it does magic there
01:51:46 DiscordBot <simple! (he/him)> meh
01:56:57 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> t'is how I feel about you
01:57:06 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> idk, I mean, sidenote, but, annoying a f

02:02:41 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Shit
02:02:58 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Anyway, on IRC it's always night when you leave and morning when you come and everyone responds in kind 😄
02:04:09 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> who casually lives as nocturnal
02:05:32 DiscordBot <DenWav> Fuck I need this https://twitter.com/_cldfire/status/1452764246018756609?t=_6JejDJWe_cGZT3NcvLj3A
02:06:20 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> How much of that is because it has a top of the line PCIe NVMe (kind of) SSD?
02:06:31 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> The disk IO is twice as fast as even the M1 MBP
02:06:53 DiscordBot <DenWav> No clue, but I mean that's all in the package you're getting with M1 Pro
02:07:24 DiscordBot <DenWav> If I ever get one I can compare 5950x with 970 pro over PCIe gen 4
02:07:36 DiscordBot <DenWav> Please someone buy me one
02:08:07 DiscordBot <DenWav> I'm hoping I can get my work to upgrade my work machine next year
02:08:34 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> My docker projects would probably work on it but my work's main project runs in a pretty customized x86 virtualbox image
02:08:44 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> I don't usually have anything to do with that but sometimes...
02:09:12 DiscordBot <DenWav> I believe docker does work on it now, but yeah virtualbox workflows would need to be adjusted
02:09:20 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> well, I mean, I guess it's erm...
02:09:34 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> at leat it's not hooked into some outdated esxi server BS or something...
02:09:46 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> On my Linux laptop I converted that to a libvirt thing but that doesn't really change the fact that it's x86
02:09:49 DiscordBot <DenWav> The core engineering team uses a big vagrant setup for local testing, but since I don't work on that I could help migrate to something that works for both architectures
02:10:05 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Does make it idle at like 4% CPU instead of 25% though, fuck virtualbox is awful
02:10:10 DiscordBot <DenWav> So I'm hoping that would be reason enough to let me get an M1 Pro machine lol
02:10:15 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Yeah this is vagrant
02:10:30 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> It's defo interesting to see arm kinda like, starting to punch a bit

02:10:53 DiscordBot <DenWav> Without fucking with my own workflow I mean
02:10:57 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> I think we just upgraded our image to something I could rebuild as an ARM setup but I'd have to build the base box myself, although I've already done that once for libvirt so...
02:10:59 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> MS is working on arm, but, I mean, they've tried before, apple is arm, more and more talk over arm servers, etc, etc
02:11:21 DiscordBot <DenWav> Arm servers have been a thing for a long term
02:11:42 DiscordBot <jmp> I wonder how fast it can build paper with no caches
02:11:44 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> Yea, but it seems that over the past like 5 years theres been a bit of a renewed interest in them, at least facing the public
02:11:48 DiscordBot <DenWav> You can use Ubuntu on arm and not even realize it
02:11:49 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> ARM servers only made sense for hyperscalers until recently
02:11:54 DiscordBot Reply to "jmp: I wonder how fast it can build paper with no caches"
02:11:55 DiscordBot <DenWav> Very
02:11:59 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Load balancers and reverse proxies and such
02:12:04 DiscordBot <DenWav> M1 MacBook air was fast as hell
02:12:11 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> They didn't have the single core perf to handle complex requests
02:13:26 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> Yea, I mean, I just look at it and 10 years ago arm was the kinda shitty CPU in phones which people wanted in computers because battery and screw intel or whatever, people gloryholing the pi, etc
02:13:57 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> 10 years ago I worked for ARM (sort of) and thought Intel was going to push in to this space and take over
02:14:39 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> yea, I kinda remember there being tales of intel dipping their toes but generally kinda seemed that they got cold feet
02:14:41 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> I worked for Linaro but my position was apparently a Canonical/TI/ARM request
02:15:04 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Remember when TI mattered for mobiles?
02:15:33 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> a long ass fucking time ago in a town called kickapoo
02:16:30 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> I was excited about all of it but then the OMAP4 dev board I had to port my stuff to was so painful to use with Ubuntu
02:16:44 DiscordBot <electroniccat[no-ping]> I mean, I always kinda forget TI was more a general electronics company even though I see a lot of their stuff in like retro comp vids, etc
02:16:54 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Running compiz actually made it faster since it let the GPU handle moving windows around and such but still
02:17:41 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> But I ended up doing all my work in an Ubuntu VM on a 2011 MBP since VMWare started the gallium3d project so I had good GLES drivers in there
02:18:04 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Just checked back in with the dev board like once a month to see how broken it was
02:48:30 DiscordBot Reply to "electroniccat[no-ping]: a long ass fucking time ago in a town called kickapoo"
02:48:31 DiscordBot <Roosterseatyou> ive been to the state park there. its pretty
03:42:36 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> A single M1 Max CPU core is able to access memory at 102 GB/s
03:44:00 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> 2 cores is 186 GB/s, 3 is 204 GB/s, 4-8 are 224 GB/s, 9-10 (adding the efficiency cores) is 243 GB/s
03:44:19 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> I wonder if that means the M1 Pro can also do 243 GB/s on the CPUs then or if it's half of that
03:44:36 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> The M1 CPU cores could max out their bandwidth but it was only like 60 GB/s iirc
03:45:53 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Ah, the M1 Pro would max out at 204 GB/s, right
03:45:58 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Close enough
03:46:59 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Apparently Anandtech couldn't get the GPU to use more than 90 GB/s so you'll only use all that memory bandwidth on the M1 Max if you're using the rest of the stuff on the SoC too
04:38:23 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> M1 Max is just casually beating the 5800X desktop chip on SPECint2017 multithreaded and is 26% faster than the 5950X on SPECfp2017 multithreaded
04:39:14 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> While using half the power for the entire laptop as the TDP of just the AMD CPU (which is probably lower than how much power it was actually using)

04:46:19 DiscordBot <rosa_xo (she/they)> omw to cry
04:47:35 DiscordBot <Amaranth (he/him)> Pretty sure the SPECfp2017 win is entirely due to the memory bandwidth, on the individual tests it's mostly in the same area but then a few of them it just runs away

05:42:11 DiscordBot <simple! (he/him)> I succeeded taking a pic of the stars. Purposefully overexposed and then brought down the exposure and raised the other tones in post. Need more practice though. My shutter speed was a bit too slow, so I got a tiny bit of star trailing (you can see the stars look a bit distorted, that's why.) And the light from the bottom coming up is my city's light pollution 🙄
05:42:42 DiscordBot <Idriz> I don't see you there?
